North foehn

The north foehn arises when cold air masses from the north or north west cross the Alps, often accompanied by cloud and precipitation on the northern Alpine slopes. The dry air falls on the southern slopes of the Alps and this leads to the warm dry fall winds typical of the foehn. The effects of the north foehn are not usually as extreme as those of the south foehn.
