Measures to counter bank erosion

The following measures avert or reduce the danger of bank erosion:

Technical / biological measures
  • Protect the bed and banks of the watercourse.

Spatial planning measures and object protection
  • Ensure that constructions have an adequate depth of foundations.
  • Buildings must withstand the dynamic effects of flowing water.

Organisational measures
  • Since during bank erosion the damage to the bank generally takes place portion by portion, the danger is apparent some time in advance (fraction of an hour). Therefore, people out of doors are hardly endangered, if they are behaving in a reasonable way. However, portions of the bank slide away quite suddenly.
